Environmental, Social and Governance

Sustainable tourism and corporate social responsibility are a key part of our company identity. We not only take all necessary steps to protect and support our local natural and historic environments, but prioritise support of our local community too: embracing culture and the arts; providing opportunities to enhance the educational level of the next generation; and contributing to the welfare of animals through our registered charity.

Enavsma Foundation

Inspired by the passion of our late founder, Alecos Michaelides, for the education of the new generation, we collaborate with Round Table 7 Paphos to provide postgraduate level scholarships to students facing financial hardship. To date, ten scholarships, with a total value of €132,000, have been awarded to local students, supporting their dreams in Cypriot universities and beyond.

Simba Animal Aid

Simba Animal Aid

Our hotels are dog-friendly and offer an array of comforts to guests’ four-legged friends. Continuing this passion, we established «SIMBA Animal Aid Cyprus » in 2019: a non-profit organisation dedicated to the rescue of neglected or abandoned local animals. The Company—and its many dedicated staff— cover all financial, operational and maintenance needs of SIMBA’s Nicosia dog shelter, providing care and finding forever homes for around 400 strays a year.

Cultural Events for Cypriot Artists

Inspired by events organised as part of «Cultural Capital Paphos 2017», we began sponsoring and hosting local cultural events, subsequently offering a support platform to local artists. Since 2017, more than 40 different events have given dozens of local artists—in the fields of photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics, writing and more—the opportunity to present their work to the public.

Supporting Cypriot Producers and Traditions

Supporting Cypriot Producers and Traditions

We actively source locally produced goods and services, participating in the “Cyprus Breakfast” initiative and embracing regional cuisine in our menus. We source our citrus fruit from the Polis area, our meats from Paphos farms and charcuteries, and make our own cheese from Polis Dairy’s blended sheep and goats’ milk. We always favour seasonal, local produce: potatoes from Larnaca’s red soil; organic raw honey and syrups from Limassol; a daily fresh Mediterranean catch from local fishermen plus local Cypriot eggs, herbs, legumes, olive oil, vinegars, capers, vine leaves… the list goes on.

Water Management

Water Management

We actively implement water-saving measures to reduce consumption and promote sustainability. We use grey water for garden watering, encourage guests to reduce their linen change frequency and use water-saving taps. Our low moisture mopping system minimises water usage, and we monitor water consumption using meters. Additionally, we compare daily water usage with previous years to ensure efficient utilisation.

Energy Management

We have upgraded to energy-efficient chillers, AC units that deactivate when windows or doors are open and LED light fixtures that offer the same brightness with less power. We recover heat from the chillers to warm the pool water, monitor daily consumption, and educate employees on energy management. Regular equipment maintenance prevents energy loss while a new photovoltaic system will soon generate electricity from solar energy.

Waste Management and Resourcefulness

Waste Management and Resourcefulness

Committed to reducing single-use plastics, we are certified by “Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free” and actively work towards Cyprus becoming a zero-plastic destination. Our initiatives include maintaining a plastic-free beach, recycling paper, batteries, toners, cooking oil, and glass, using reusable containers instead of clingfilm in the kitchen, refillable toiletry bottles in the bathroom and reusable slippers in the spa. We repurpose food remnants, especially from oranges and watermelons, transforming the skins into traditional candied fruits for our breakfast buffet. Additionally, we use water filtration systems to eliminate plastic bottle usage, serve condiments in small dishes instead of packets, and offer electronic bills instead of paper.

Environmental Policy

Strengthening Community Ties

We prioritise the employment of local talent and encourage our employees to engage in volunteer work. Additionally, we offer hands-on work experience to students and donate to organisations like the Sophia Foundation to support vulnerable individuals in the community.

Governance

Governance

At Thanos Hotels we believe that maintaining high ethical standards is a very important aspect, as strong ethics and good business go hand in hand. Therefore, we have created an environment where our people should feel comfortable speaking up when they suspect potential violations of laws and policies. Additionally, we urge our employees to demonstrate high standards of integrity and lead by example.
